NLAB Sports hosts youth basketball skills clinic
On Saturday June 4th, NLAB hosted a youth basketball skills clinic at the Highland YMCA. This was a co-ed clinic ages 8-14 years old. The basketball clinic was facilitated by former and current college coaches and players from the surrounding areas. There were a total of 11 coaches and players from Riverside Community College and La Verne. The gym was jam packed with a total of 60+ kids that attended the clinic. NLAB was proudly sponsored by Gatorade and the kids all received Gatorade bottles and Gatorade towels. We also had many kids sponsored by the hard work of an individual(s) from the San Bernardino School district. The cost of the clinic was $20. The kids also received a NLAB Sports bag and a t-shirt. At the end of the clinic the kids were fed pizza and Gatorade beverages.
The basketball clinic was extremely organized and well thought out. The coaches had the kids in all sorts of drills. These drills included ball handling, shooting, lay-up, defense and more. The kids were very excited to learn from the coaches. “I was never taught how to do a proper lay-up” said one of the kids. This is special to hear because our goal was to teach the basics, so the athletes could walk away and feel like they learned something. The coaches had a mentoring session were they would talk to the kids about life, education and the importance of good grades. At the end of the clinic, former Los Angeles Clipper player Keith Closs came out to talk to the kids about life and athletics. The kids were truly inspired and motivated by his story. The feedback from parents were nothing but positive. They were excited to see their kids learning the game of basketball. NLAB will be hosting future clinics in various sports.
